The national education system in Shenzhen is fully developed. Over the past 22 years, investment into the city's education totals 20.193 billion yuan, and an education development fund has been established.1,117 kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, colleges and adult education schools have been established, thus creating a system of basic education, higher education, professional education and adult education.

Shenzhen University and Shenzhen Polytechnic School are both based in the city. In the year 2001, five colleges (including two adult colleges) recruited 14,920 college students. By the end of 2001, there were a total of 377 primary schools with a total enrolment of 363,657 students. There are a total of 107 middle schools with a total enrolment of 126,190 students. There are eight junior colleges with a total enrolment of 3,720 students. The attendance for children of school ages is 100 percent. The graduation rate of the junior middle school students is 98.9 percent.

Shenzhen University
Located at Shenzhen Houhai Bay and on an area of 1.44 sqm, Shenzhen University was established in 1983 and faces Yuen Long, Hong Kong. It is identified with its swarming buildings, trees and flowers and pleasant atmosphere.
The university embraces 13 colleges and several academic research centers, which run more than 40 specialties offering bachelor's degrees and large-scale adult education programs.
SZU boasts a highly qualified faculty of 800, of whom 545 are professors and associate professors, while 231 hold Ph. D. degrees. Nine professors are supervisors of Ph.D. students. One academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering has been invited to work in the university.

Shenzhen Polytechnic
Established in 1993 and sponsored by the Municipal Government, Shenzhen Polytechnic is located near picturesque Xili Lake. It occupies a total of 230,000 square meters with another 26,00 square meter for student accommodation. With 12 departments, the college now offers 48 disciplines, which contain 82 specialties from its humble beginnings with two disciplines and 59 students. There are now 8,677 full time undergraduates in the college and 1,187 adult education students.
The college has already transferred more than 4,000 technical and managing talents for Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta.

Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology
Authorized by Guangdong Provincial Government and Ministry of Education and invested by Shenzhen Municipal Government, the institute is oriented towards the electronic and informational disciplines and emphasizes fostering practical personnel. Located near Mount Bijia, the institute has a total area of 126,700 square meters. It provides three-year full time professional training.

International School
