On the afternoon of November 8th, nearly 200 guests from home and abroad attended the 2007 annual meeting of the 4th Council of Guangzhou Overseas Exchange Association (GZOEA). At the meeting, Cao Jianliao, Vice Mayor and newly-appointed Honorary Chairman of GZOEA, introduced to guests the new figures for social-economic development in Guangzhou.

Ms Chen Xiangmei, wife of Flying-Tiger General Chennault, addressed the meeting and sayingn that she was glad to see the rapid development of Guangzhou in the past two decades. She also said that she hoped the youth of our city would learn more about their country to promote their motherland when in foreign countries. Additionally, she pointed out that the Chinese in America should not only do their own jobs well but that they should also serve American society so that they could win the respect of local Americans.

Currently there are a total of 4,784 enterprises run by overseas Chinese or compatriots from Hong Kong and Macau in and around our city which generated 53.6% of Guangzhou's gross product this past year. In addition, there are 3,200 projects in Guangzhou that draw donations worth RMB 3.6 billion from overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macau.
